Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal data Stop Urban Sprawl (stopurbansprawl.uk) collects, why we collect it, and your choices. It applies to this website and to signing our petition.

Who we are

Stop Urban Sprawl is a campaign about housing and infrastructure in the East of England. For questions about this policy or your data, email corrections@stopurbansprawl.uk.

What we collect

When you sign the petition, we ask for:

• Your name
• Your email address
• Your postcode (optional)
• Whether you want your name shown publicly on the petition page
• Consent to email you about local development and related updates

We also store technical details needed to run the form: the page you signed from, and (where relevant) the district associated with that page. We do not ask for payment details or identity documents.

How we use it

We use your details to:

• Record your signature on the petition
• Email you about development in your area, the campaign's work, and related updates (you can unsubscribe from any email)
• Publish your name on the petition page once twenty people have signed, unless you untick "Show my name" — in which case we list you as anonymous
• Count signatures by area (for example, how many people in a district have signed)

We do not sell your details. We do not share the email list with other organisations for their marketing.

What we publish

On the petition page we may show a public list of signatories: either the name you gave us, or "anonymous" if you opted out of showing your name. We never publish your email address or postcode.

Lawful basis

Under UK GDPR, we rely on your consent to email you and to show your name publicly. Recording the petition signature and keeping the list secure is also necessary for our legitimate interests in running a public campaign, balanced against your rights.

Where it is stored

Petition submissions are stored in Google Sheets, accessed only via a restricted service account. Aggregated signature counts and the public name list (names or "anonymous") may be cached in Upstash Redis so pages load quickly. The site is hosted on Vercel.

Cookies and analytics

If Meta advertising tools are configured, we may use the Meta Pixel and Meta's Conversions API to measure petition sign-ups (a "Lead" event). That can involve Meta processing device and usage data under Meta's own terms. We use Vercel Analytics for page views and anonymous custom events (for example starting or submitting the petition form, postcode lookup, and planning filters). Those events do not include your name, email or postcode. These tools help us understand whether the site and ads are working; they are not used to sell your petition details.

How long we keep it

We keep petition and email details while the campaign is active and for a reasonable period afterwards so we can demonstrate the petition and honour unsubscribe requests. You can ask us to delete or update your details at any time (see below). Cached counts and name lists are temporary and rebuilt from the main list.

Your rights

You can ask us to:

• Tell you what personal data we hold about you
• Correct inaccurate details
• Delete your details, or stop emailing you
• Remove or anonymise your name on the public petition list where we still control that page

Email corrections@stopurbansprawl.uk and say what you need. If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, you can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Children

This site is aimed at adults taking part in a public campaign. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

Changes

We may update this page when the campaign or our tools change. The "Last updated" date at the top will change when we do.
